I am, too, a bad ass

and apparently, so is my mom...

I just handed in an essay about my relationship with my mom for an anthology to be published next year. It’s a sweet essay, poignant and personal, but evocative (I hope) of the universal complexities in every mother-daughter dance.

Or so I thought.

Last week, I emailed the first draft to my mom and envisioned her tears of joy as she read it. She would call me and we would share and care and reminisce in a soft-focus haze of love.

Well, she called me, all right. But there were no tears of joy. “The way you’ve portrayed me in this essay?” she said. “I’m nothing like this.”

“But…” I frowned into the phone. “Yes, you are.”

“Oh no, I’m not.”

“Oh yes, you are.”

“Oh no, I’m not.”

And on and on. For like, hours. We can agree that certain events took place—but the way they took place differs wildly, depending on which of us you talk to. We ended up having a good laugh and agreeing that we’re lucky we can’t see ourselves as others do.

I myself harbor this delusion that I am just like Dr. Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy. I’m tough, I’m sullen, I’m a hard-core, bad ass force to be reckoned with. Seriously. I’m the ice queen. Fear me. Yar.

But if you ask my friends, they will beg to differ. In fact, they will tell you that the TV character I most resemble is Charlotte York from Sex and the City. (Whatever. Just because I write thank you notes in a timely fashion…)

This wounds me. I don’t want to be Charlotte; I want to be Cristina. And anyone who knows me will affirm that I am, in fact, Cristina all the way.

Except for, you know, my closest friends. Hmph.

So maybe it’s better than I can’t see myself the way you guys do. But I know the truth, and the truth is that Cristina and I were separated at birth. Oh, and while we’re on the subject of Grey’s Anatomy, I’d like to know where you all stand on the McDreamy versus McSteamy controversy.

I’m a McDreamy girl. McSteamy’s a little too self-consciously tortured for my tastes. I mean, why go out of your way to inject drama and obstacles into your life? Sure, he’d be fun for a fling, but McDreamy is much better relationship material. Plus he has good hair, even after 12 hours in surgery, and he likes dogs. That’s very important in a man.

Which is probably just what Charlotte would say.

Sigh.

McDreamy all the way! The sad thing is, I'm starting to really like Mrs. McDreamy, even though that marriage is DOOMED. I'm hoping McSteamy is nicer, and less cheesy, then he first appears, so that she has someone nice to snuggle up with on those cold Seattle nights.

I wish I were Christina. After all, she's got Preston Burke, who, in a word: YUM. (Quick note: my husband dances EXACTLY like Preston Burke!) But I'm always too afraid of hurting everyone's feelings, which is very un-Christine like.

And can I just say, that McDreamy has the nicest freaking trailer I have ever seen. A sub-z? Teak panelled walls? How freaking cool is he?

Oh, Beth. Beth, Beth, Beth. You are one of the sweetest people in the known universe. You make Charlotte look like a bad ass. Sorry, hon. :)

And McDreamy is annoying me. But can you believe she slept with GEORGE?????

First of all, my dear, sweet, SWEET Beth... you are not Christina. You're Charlotte. Not that there's anything wrong with that. ;) But you're really too sweet to be Christina.

As for the McD or McS debate - between the two, so very McD. But between McD and George... I'm rooting for the underdog. I know Meredith and McD are just a matter of time, but I heart George big time. As a matter of fact, I heart him so much that the only reason I want Meredith for him is because it's what he wants. Reality is, George can do better.

But, if it came down to a call between Preston Burke and any other man on the planet (besides Fish or Firth) I'd pick PB every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Sadly, I think I AM George. Minus the pesky penis thing. I'd like to be Bailey. Totally competent and confident. A b*tch on wheels that everybody loves.

And you, Beth? Sorry. You're not Cristina. I'm not sure you're quite Charlotte either. Honestly, I think you might be Carrie.

I love Bailey too! She was cracking me up during the last episode, when she was barking out orders with the baby strapped to her chest.

And as for Meredith and George . . . NO. No, no, no. It's just wrong. Meredith is going to end up breaking George's heart, and I'm going to have to start hating her, which I really don't want to do.

Besides, what's up with Meredith and the sleeping around? Seriously, is there anyone she hasn't hopped in bed with?

I must weigh in on the whole George thing. As I mentioned in my blog... IT. IS. SO. WRONG. She is going to break his heart and I'm not sure I'll be able to watch it.

MCdreamy all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You heard it from me first -- IZZY and DR. BURKE will be together. This season or next, I predict.

GEORGE NEEDS A HAIRCUT. I feel strongly about this, I don't care if it's part of his underdog persona. (AND I'm sitting here going GEORGE SLEPT WITH MEREDITH???? Because I taped it and haven't watched it yet. You can bet I will tonight.

From a writer's perspective, since Meredith wants McDreamy, they must be kept apart. Burke and Cristina are doomed; I predict he'll dump her. Him & Izzy all the way.

I think you may be right about Preston and Izzy. They were pretty cozy while cooking Thanksgiving dinner . . .

Can you just imagine how gorgeous their children would be?

McDreamy for one simple reason. McSteamy came to town to bring Adison back, right? Then why the hell was he hitting on Meredith as soon as he walked in, he didn't even know at that point that she was "the intern." Doesn't sound like he's too committed to Adison...he's an assmonkey in my humble opinion.
