Gone Phishing!
...and I don't mean the slippery things with gills that live in water kind of phis
Of course, I'm referring to Internet phishing where a Horrible, Bad, Criminal deviously imitates a well-respected company's website in a bid to squeeze passwords and account numbers and other sensitive data from unsuspecting innocent customers.
I regularly get emails from phisers, and it drives me crazy - it's right up there with spam offering to enlarge my penis (I don't have a penis), or help my performance with viagra (I don't have a penis), or to sell me a fake rolex watch (I don't wear any watch if it costs more than ten bucks because I break them). But phising is far more dangerous.
This is what the Horrible, Bad, Criminals do - they send you a fake email that looks like it came from the real company. You are then invited to click a link, and clicking the link takes you to the fake site, which looks a lot like the real site. You are then asked to divulge very secret security information about yourself. And then the Horrible, Bad, Criminal phishers are in - they have your information and can steal your money and identity!
Every day I also receive Nigerian Scam letters but not just from Nigeria - from everywhere - you know - the ones where someone has been hard done to, and they have inherited millions or similar scenario, but "someone" (the government, the police, insert relevant similar option) is preventing them or their client from leaving the country, or similar situation involving terrible accidents, or similar involving them being made an orphan due to a terrible accident, and you, at the other end of their email, are their ONLY hope. If only you will just divulge your bank details and/or meet with them and give them a bit of ready cash up front, and what not, they will transfer their millions to you and YOU GET MILLIONS AS A REWARD.
You know, there's no such thing as a free lunch, so just don't do it.
And just like our darling Alesia, every day I open email and discover that I've won millions in a lottery that I know for a fact I have not entered, and if only I will click a certain link and give my private information, I will receive millions! Lucky me.
Yeah, I'm a little cranky, today.
Latest new scam that I am seeing is "make your girl happy with meds." Gah!
There's just so little time, and so much junk mail to delete unopened...

And here's another favorite spam email masquerading as "cheap phentermine."
I delete those guys without a thought (although I acutally have no idea what a phentermine is, cheap or expensive. Do I really need to/ want to know?)

This isn't exactly help, but...when I am forced to register on some site just to get information or "browse," I use a made up name. Then I can tell by the email addresses on the spam who sold my "name." I once registered on one of those find your old high school friends things, just out of curiosity. I used the name "Martha." You'd be amazed at the amount of spam and scam email Martha gets.
So, not that you can do much about it, but if you use a different name each time, you know who sold your info, erroneous though it may be.

I actually kind of like the Nigerian one. I appreciate the imagination that goes into trying to spin it in so many different ways.
I just now, however, deleted one that claimed to be from Amazon. It was offering me a free gift if I would fill out a survey. I know it's garbage, but part of me is still wondering if I just threw out $50 worth of books. There are easily $50 worth of books that I'd like to own. Or maybe CDs. I'm hankering big time for the soundtrack to HAROLD AND KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE.

I thought this was insidious and it actually almost got me. I got a terrible letter from a "buyer" on ebay claiming to have paid me $500 for an item and never received the item. If I didn't respond, this person was going to file a grievance with ebay. It was so angry that I almost responded that I was not the right person. I was not selling anything on ebay. They would have had my login and password and who knows what kind of damage they could have done then because I do sell things occasionally on ebay so there was a slight possiblity that some mix up could have occured. Just as I was about to hit the respond button, I decided I should go to the ebay website and see if there was a message in my message box there. There wasn't! It was definitely a phishing scam. They really have a lot of nerve!

Kelley, they certainly do have a lot of nerve! But I'm so happy you realized it was a scam!
ZaZa - I never thought of setting up a secret identity - what a good idea :-)
And Eileen - there's no such thing as that free lunch - I think you were wise to throw out that offer!
Honestly, these people astound me - but I guess, sadly, that they make money from it.
