It's Comeback Time

Like Hammer Time? Only with comebacks? Right? Does that work? No? Hmmmm...

Okay, before we get started today, I have two things I'd like to announce.

1. My newest romantic comedy, The Comeback Kiss, has officially hit the shelves! It's the continuation of Finn's story (the bird thief from Maybe Baby, who was just starting to kinda maybe think about reforming - a little - at the end of that book.) At the beginning of The Comeback Kiss, he's still kinda maybe thinking about it, but then a telepathic dog, a series of suspicious fires, and the girl he could never forget all conspire to get him to walk the straight and narrow. Kinda maybe.

2. I got a Smart Bitch title! If you haven't been regularly visiting Smart Bitches Who Read Trashy Books, you absolutely must go immediately and bookmark. These girls are bright, fun and they don't let anyone get away with anything. I love them. Anyway, I won a contest there recently and they dubbed me...

My mother, she is so proud.

If you don't know what "avaleuse" means, well, neither did I. My advice? Don't look it up on the web. It will take you to very, very bad French places and I don't think you want to go there. After screaming "MY EYES! MY EYES!" and clicking the home button on my computer, I ended up getting a very tame definition from a French-English dictionary. If you really MUST know, go to the Smart Bitches and check out the comments under my coronation entry. And don't say I didn't warn ya...

And now that that's out of the way...

... in honor of The Comeback Kiss, our theme here at the L.C. this week is...

... drum roll, please...

... okay, fine, or not, whatever...

... comebacks!

Okay. So it's not terribly original, but it gets the point across. And in honor of our theme week, I'm going to go with the Top Ten Things I'd Like to See Make a Comeback.

The baggy, hide-your-body-in-shame styles of the eighties. Not necessarily for me, and not necessarily right now, but sometime between now and when my daughters stop letting me buy their clothes. The little baby slutlet clothes that are out there now in the girls section are scaring me.

Totally outrageous, completely unbelievable detective/romantic comedy shows. Okay, the storytelling was... lacking... but who doesn't miss Dave and Maddie? The Scarecrow and Mrs. King? Remington and what's-her-name? We need an updating on that opposites-attract-and-solve-mysteries thing.

Reasonable gas prices. Heh heh heh... Bastards.

Black. Or, rather, I'd like for people to stop saying, "X is the new black." Because you know what? It's not the new black. Black is the only black. Stop, already.

Hare Krishnas at the airports. For all the "Hare Krishna at the airport" jokes I've seen on television and in movies, I've never even once actually seen one. But I think they'd be fun to see, in their brightly-colored attire and banging their tambourines. And they'd get my mind off the fact that I'm about to step into a tremendous machine that's being held up in the air by... what, exactly? It's not natural, I'm telling you.

Dr. Scholl's.Weren't they cool? Once? Like, in the seventies? Maybe? I don't know. But I remember wearing them all summer long and they were really comfy. I mean, I like my Tevas as much as the next girl, but... I'm sighing for some Scholl's.

Good movies. Remember the days before Hollywood started focus-grouping the hell out of everything? When the movies were actually good? Yeah, that was something, wasn't it? Note to Hollywood: If one screenwriter can't do it, twelve will not-do-it worse.

Joss Whedon. Okay, so Joss never really went anywhere. He went from TV to movies, though, and I want him to come back to TV. It's where all the good stuff is happening, and quite frankly, I need a weekly Joss fix. I'm starting to get the shakes.

Fedoras. For my money, there isn't a man in the land who can't be made sexier with a fedora.

Oh... crap. That's only nine things. And I have to go. So, fine - gimme number 10. I'll pick the best one, and that person will win a signed copy of The Comeback Kiss. Sounds like a win/win to me! Leave your suggestion in the comments; I'll announce the winner in my blog here next Tuesday.

This blog was brought to you by The Comeback Kiss, Lani’s latest romantic comedy about first love, second chances, and the kind of trouble you can only get into when trying to do the right thing.

Sweetie,

The Dr. Scholl's are totally back! Seriously! The classic ones that I used to manage to kick myself with in the opposite ankle and a whole bunch of new ones, too.

Okay. That's only one thing, but still . . .

Scholls are indeed back! And I used to kick myself in the ankle, too.

Things I'd like to see back... heck, I was just thinking of something the other day! And no, it wasn't my prebaby figure, although...

How about news broadcasters reporting actual news. Not some blonde twitlette with a hyper-whitened smile saying, "And tonight's top story: Tom Kitten!" Really, who cares? If the person is in Hollywood and acts in movies, they are insane. Michael Jackson will always be a nut case, Mick Jaggar will always be scary lookin', Mel Gibson will always be uber-Catholic, and Tom Cruise will always be the world's worst salesman for the L. Ron Hubbard Society (a.k.a. Scientologists). This crap belongs on E! and ET, NOT the nightly news.

What needs to make a comeback? The bubble gum pop of the early to mid 1980's. I'm so sick of angst in my music. I just wanna feel good!

Posted by: Tina at May 9, 2006 2:47 PM

Legwarmers.

They were so comfy.

Things I'd like to see make a comeback:

Tan m&m's.

Pants that are not low-waisted, or better still, ultra-low-waisted. I count on my pants sitting on my waist because THAT'S WHERE PANTS SIT, WHY ELSE DO WE HAVE A WAIST? I also do not enjoy the feeling of my pants falling off my body all day long. Walking around hitching your pants up is not sexy.

Barbie Clothes...remember you could go into the toy aisle and buy Barbie a new outfit once upon a time? Not so much anymore.

I miss the movies that were musicals and I'd like to see the young Robert Redford come back to the screen. Oh, and disco...how I loved that music. Am I dating myself here? haha! I also wish not for myself since I'm done with the dating scene, but for my nieces, being able to go to a bar and not worry about something being put in your drink.

Another Joss freak weighs in:
Well, it may not be quite up your alley, but Joss is writing for Marvel Comics - he's penned two "graphic novels" in the X-Men line... and more to come, I would guess.

Oh, Lauren, I'm with you on the low-waisted pants. Or hip-huggers, as they were called the last time they were in style. Back then, it was fine--I was thin. Now, they emphasize all the excess weight and totally camouflage the fact that I do still have a waist in here somewhere. *sigh*

The only thing I really want to come back is lime Starburst. The newer flavors are all just generic sweet. Blah.

Or homework that's actually for the kids to do rather than the parents--that would be nice, too.

Love's Babysoft

I love that stuff, it's not over-powering and it was the perfect scent (for someone who can not STAND eating everyone elses perfume because they must BATHE in it *gags*)

Letter writing should make a comeback. I used to love writing letters to people and anxiously awaiting the one in return. Now all I get in my mailbox is bills and junk mail. Even the occasional postcard would be nice. I like email, but sometimes its just too impersonal.

How about country music that actually sounds like country music and not some psuedo-pop crossover crap?

I'm 85 per cent of the way through The Comeback Kiss and I must say it's brilliant. I LOVE Finn. Your best yet!

P.S. My baby girl is really cute - have you seen her yet? CaitieBug.com

As for something that I would wish to make a comeback, I have to agree with the clothes thing. I don't even have children and I can't imagine handling the barely there clothing of the tween/teen generation these days. Whatever happened to just being a kid and not growing up so fast?

Not to go off topic here, but whatever happened to the Fish photo? Is it on your website?

Sorry, first time posting here, so I may just be out of the loop.

Jenn, your baby is SO CUTE! My girls are 13 and 4, and my son is 10 1/2, so anytime I see tiny, new babies, I miss that age so much! Generally, before I get the baby-bug again, I remember that mine are 13, 10 and 4 and I slap myself silly for even pondering the issue...

I'm liking this list. Some nice contenders here... very cool...

Cowboy - I know about the comics. Fish and I are just starting our foray into comics, starting with Joss. Are they good? What am I saying? Of course they're good.

Christina - I do need to scan the Fish picture. Will do for next week's blog.

Jenn - the baby is ADORABLE! Just the sweetest little thing. And I'm glad you're enjoying TCK! It's a huge relief to hear! I always get nervous with every book that this is the one where I'll start sucking eggs...

Lani -
Well, I enjoyed the hell out of Joss's foray into comic writing, but then I have loved the X-men since before Chris Claremont re-invented them in the early 80's.... but then, that's perhaps a bit too much comic book geekiness to admit in public, eh?

Posted by: Cowboy [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 10, 2006 8:40 PM

Congratulations on your new title, Fish must be thrilled. Did he ever get his metal detector? I also loved my Dr. Scholls.

Posted by: Terri at May 11, 2006 8:14 AM

You can admit loving the X-Men in public, honey, but please please please do not tell them how many times you saw Star Wars in high school.

Kisses,

Eileen

Thanks for the nice comments on my cute daughter!

Lani, you could never suck eggs because you're an interesting person. And a smart ass. Both of which totally come through in your writing, making for interesting, smart-ass characters - my favorite kind! And I'm not just saying that because I luuuuvvvv you.

Eileen,

He can't possibly have seen it as many times as my four year old. ;)

Oooo--things I wish would come back... Earth Shoes were really cool and comfy. Tie dye was fun. What about the Annie Hall look? Casual and comfy--I'm all about comfort!! There is stuff out there that I wish would go BACK into the wardrobe--polyester, paisley or striped shirts with zippers--gawd awful ugly back in the 70's, not any better now! LOL! I loved the big knit sweaters that opened in the front--you know, sweater coats. Jean skirts. Peasant blouses. Remember when Gunny Sax were all the rage?! And I ditto the awful "baby slut" clothes out there that is all the rage for the pre-adolescent and toddler girls. My girls' school finally went to uniform polos because it was so hard to find shirts/blouses that were long enough and that covered them modestly (private Christian school). I have beautiful girls but they don't need to wear short-shorts, minis, and slutty lingerie-style tops to accentuate their beauty! Madonna/Cindy Lauper they are not! LOL! I wish the game "Feely Meely" would get re-issued. That game was a BLAST! And Shenaningans--great board game.
