Comfort food
gross things we eat, courtesy of childhood
First: the winners!! My mini-contest in honor of the new anthology, WELCOME TO WISTERIA LANE, which includes several essays written by the Literary Chicks, provided many wonderful ideas for making life at home easier. The winners, who will each receive a copy of the book, are: Kim W. – for the Clorox bleach pen and for the courage to go first!! Lauren J. Harwood, for being brave enough to admit to scary singing, and Terri, for the ziploc’d outfits for camp idea. Brilliant!! (Not that they weren’t all brilliant, but I had to pick 3 somehow and I made Navy Guy and the kids vote.
Now, on to the meat and potatoes of today’s blog (get it? a food blog? Meat and potatoes? Gee, I crack myself up
Okay, you all know what I’m talking about, right? Something weird that you ate as a kid that still equals comfort food in your mind. Something so odd that you never, EVER let anybody know you eat it still. Not often, and maybe only when life is really piling on the suckitude, but there it is, you’re stressed, upset, angry, laid off, facing a felony rap for embezzlement, or whatever, and what do you want?
Well, if you’re me, it’s TUNA FISH CASSEROLE. Yep. Not weird enough for you? Riiiiiight. Except, it’s the kind made with POTATOES AND GREEN PEA SOUP.
I am SO not kidding. [Pause for collective EUUWWWWW]. My mother (and let me explain about my Midwestern mother – to her, salt is a spice. There was a lot of Wonder Bread in my childhood. Meatloaf baked with ketchup on top was GOURMET. Yeah, THAT kind of Midwestern) -- my mother made this UTTERLY BIZARRE tuna fish casserole with tuna fish (had to be the kind packed in oil), diced potatoes, and canned green pea soup.
THEN STIR.
That’s it. I was married at least four years before I let Navy Guy even know that – yes, how gross is this? - sometimes I STILL EAT IT.
What about you? Here’s your chance to ‘fess up. What’s your weirdest comfort food?
Hugs,
Alesia

Mine is not necessarily weird... but it IS comfort food... peanut butter and fluff sandwiches, on wheat bread (fluffernutters!)... and I like to drink them with coke because the fluff makes the coke get all foamy in your mouth.
Considering I'm sitting here in the middle of Project Doom (working from home on a Sunday, I so do not get paid enough for this) I think I might need to treat myself to a fluffernutter.
I'm already wearing my iPod. ;)

I love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with dill pickles....yummmy, but I don't eat them often

I eat lemons. Yes, lemons. Usually sprinkled with salt. It's like having a shot of tequilla without the shot of tequilla. I know to many that just sounds completely irrational, but there you go. As a kid I had a babysitter who used to eat lemons all the time and I picked it up from her.
I also use lemon juice as an all-purpose condiment since I don't like other condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo, relish, A1 steak sauce... the list just keeps growing).

Okay, that's genuinely and completely disgusting. But I don't like tuna casserole in any form.
I have two-- one, (and this is a genuinely Cuban thing) I was a really, really skinny kid who was extremely picky about eating, so the idea was to get Barb to Eat Protein and Lots of It. Which is why my family doctor recommended eggs and lots of them. Raw, preferably. So I grew up eating white rice with a raw egg cracked over the top and mixed in. And I LIKED it.
The other isn't as overtly gross, at least not to me, but one of my favorite comfort foods even is taking soft, fresh from the oven Cuban bread, putting two fried eggs on it (there are the eggs again) and putting about four hot from the oil crispy ham croquettes on top and putting another slice of bread on top, mashing the whole mess together. Served with a huge mug of cafe con leche and it's heaven.
What?

Okay, Lauren, what is fluff? I have this disturbing image of you eating peanut butter and dryer lint sandwiches.
Raw eggs over rice??? Yes, that's nearly as disturbing as pea soup casserole. Seriously.
Straight lemons? Sounds kind of good to me, actually. But then I believe mayonnaise is the Food of Satan, so we've got a lot in common . . .
And peanut butter again - but with dill pickles. Hmmm. Science boy loves this - not with the pickles actually ON the sandwich, but separately, and it just seems wrong. But, again, tuna fish casserole. No room to throw the first gallstone here.

I dip my dill pickles right into the peanut butter. They're really good that way.
Comfort food is still, and always will be, chicken friend steak with smashed potatoes and gravy. The white gravy. Made from milk, flour, and the grease from the chicken fried steak. That always makes my soul feel better, though my hips generally don't appreciate it at all.
The other thing that always comforts me is chili, served mom's way. That means a HUGE bowl, with a warm flour tortilla in it, followed by the chili (the hotter the better), then with grated cheddar cheese and two spoonfuls of peanut butter. Yes, peanut butter. You put it right into the bowl with the chili, and mix it up real good, so that the chili turns from light brown to a creamier color. Chunky PB works better, because then you have those peanut chunks in there as well. I know, you're thinking "YUCK!", but you're so so wrong. I've made converts out of skeptics with the PB in chili thing. Really.

Fluff is an absolutely delicious thing . . . it's basically whipped marshmellows. And with peanut butter? Heaven.
My gross comfort food: peanut butter and bacon sandwiches.

Warm jell-o. I don't know if it does any kind of internal damage or if it can set inside your stomach, but that's what we got when we were home with sore throats.
Eileen
P.S. I LOVE Tuna Fish Casserole, but with potatoes and green peas? Blecchh! On the other hand, I want to try the thing with the cuban bread, fried eggs and ham. Yeah. I am so NOT a nice Jewish girl.

Potato chip sandwiches. White bread, butter, regular salted potato chips. Smash together to fit in mouth. I love it! Of course, now I can't have any flour (wheat) and gluten-free bread just isn't the same. :( My potato chip sandwich days are over. :(

Woohoo! Thank you, Alesia! Great way to start the week.
I don't eat much of what I did when I was younger. We ate a lot of casseroles in those days and I don't eat them today. Especially tuna. I've turned into a meat and potatoes person and I don't like my food mixed. LOL

Hmmm...bet the peanut butter in the chili is good, since I usually eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with my chili anyway!

I can relate to the "salt is a spice" comment! My dad smoked for years and food was very bland to him, so we kids learned to eat very salty food. One of his favorite meals included broccoli potatoes covered in bacon grease. Broccoli potatoes are mashed potatoes that you then beat cooked broccoli into. With a little butter they weren't half bad and Mom got us kids to eat our veggies that way.
Myself, my favorite food is probably still kidney beans with red wine vinegar and sugar with salt pork on the side. Mmm--mmmm! I think it is a Dutch thing--Michelle, have you ever heard of this, since you are now residing in the Netherlands? Cooked red kidney beans, drained, then you sprinkle them with vinegar and sugar. It's sort of a tart/sweet taste. Dad put bacon grease on his beans also--how he doesn't have majorly clogged arteries is beyond me! And the side/salt port. Not bacon--it's uncured bacon that is very fatty and thick. Fried up crisp it is wonderful in the vinegar and sugar. I have made this dish once or twice since I have been married, but I am not sure my kids would go for it now. The pork is hard to find--have to ask for it usually. And my number one fave--KFC chicken, extra crispy, with mashed potatoes and gravy--MMMM-MMMMM!!!!
Alesia--I love tuna casserole, but that combination just sounds vile! I make a dish with macaroni and cheese, tuna, and frozen green peas (never canned) that is actually good. But pea soup? *shudder* Of course, the pickles and peanut butter thing has me going also. PB in chili makes it a mole more or less, so I can see that it would probably be good if you like mole. Interesting--I may just have to try it next time we have chili!

Okay, I think we've proven that disgustingly foul crimes are being committed against peanut butter in homes across the world even as I type.
And, seriously? I'm feeling MUCH better about my own personal grossness reading some of these!!! I feel much better knowing you're eating marshmallow and not dryer lint. I don't like marshmallows, which might explain why I'd never heard of/eaten Fluff.
See? I knew we were all closet foodie weirdos at heart . . .er, stomach.
A. suddenly understanding why I baked peanut butter cookies last night

Wow. I always thought I was nuts for eating peanut butter and dill pickles sandwiches. My favourite omigod I had waaaay too much to drink, put something in my stomach now food. Peanut butter and bacon sandwiches or pb and baloney, pb and hot dogs, all big comfort foods.

Okay, I feel better now. I thought I was alone in my peanut butter strangeness. Here goes: Chicken Top Ramen (or Cup-o-Noodles if you must), drain most of the water, add a glop of peanut butter, seasoning packet, about 2 tbls teriyaki sauce (the thick stuff) and a couple shakes of Tabasco sauce. Gives me heartburn but I love it.

Baby carrots dipped in peanut butter ... SOOOOOO good.

I have got to try the carrots with the peanut butter. That would make it all healthy, right?

I have 2 gross favorites:
- cheetos and miracle whip sandwiches
and
- Kraft Mac & Cheese mixed with pork 'n' beans with a splash of worcestershire sauce.
Don't knock it til you've tried it. I am now going to my kitchen to try pb & pickles.
