Must See TV
Or, rather, Must Rent TV . . .
I don’t like the summer.
Sure, when you’re a kid, the summer means freedom – days spent at the beach or pool, playing with friends, biking around.
But now – and yes, I’m aware of how sad this is, but hey, I don’t have a house in the Hamptons – the summer is just a very long, very hot hiatus from good television.
I don’t even understand it. Those Hollywood people make the big bucks . . . why should their responsibility to entertain me come to an abrupt halt in May? I want new programming! I want Must See TV!
At least these days we have Netflix, so I can catch up on all the shows I didn’t watch the first time.
I’m gun shy about committing to a new series when it’s first aired. In fact, I’m choosier about the shows I start to watch then I was about the men I used to date back when I was single. One slice of bad pizza and a conversation about What Was Your Favorite Star Wars Action Figure is only an hour out of your life . . . watching a series week after week, becoming more and more engrossed in the character’s lives, only to have the series yanked away by the hard-hearted network executives . . . Now that’s heartbreak.
And, yes, I’m still bitter that Cupid was cancelled. I won’t be burned like that again.
So here’s what I have on my Netflix queue for the summer:
(1) Entourage, Season Two. I love this show about a stupid movie star and his three worthless friends, even though watching all of that silicone not bouncing around always makes me paranoid that my breasts are waaaay too small. Plus, it has Jeremy Piven in it (see Cupid, above).
(2) Grey’s Anatomy, Season One. I’m now a religious Grey’s watcher, but I missed the first few episodes, and I have to find out how MerDer began.
(3) House. I know nothing about this show, but I like Hugh Laurie, so what the hell.
(4) Wonderfalls. Recommended by our own Lani!
(5) Alias. Maybe. So far, George keeps sliding it further and further down the Netflix queue in a very passive-aggressive way.
(6) Coupling. Apparently a “Friends” based British show . . . and since it’s European, you just know there’s lots of nudity in it.
(7) The Office. The American version that is. I watched the first episode when it originally aired, and thought it sucked compared to the brilliant BBC version, but I’ve heard it’s gotten better, so I thought I’d give it another try.
(And for everyone who was worried about George being deprived of his boring old Classics, I put both High Noon and Treasures of the Sierra Madre at the top of our Netflix Queue. Okay, so I only did it because Sam and I are jetting off tomorrow to spend a week with the grandparents in Syracuse, so I won't be stuck watching them. But still. It’s the thought that counts, right?)
Any recommendations for other series I might have missed?

Ah, so you're the other person who watched Cupid. I just picked up Entourage's first season on DVD because I have big love for Jeremy Piven. (Only good thing about Serendipity, which is saying something, since I usually really like John Cusack.)
I'm still bitter about Miracles. Although I creeped Alesia out with that one. And House is wonderful and Hugh Laurie is... le sigh.

I've found two small glimmers of hope amongst the summer tv wasteland... two series that will actually be airing NEW episodes this summer. The Closer with Kyra Sedgwick -- I love her character, especially the way she's completely in someone's face and then does that sweet little southern "Thank you" (but how DOES she eat all of that junk food and stay so skinny?).
And 30 Days (on FX); this is the show where Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) plunges people into different situations for, well, thirty days. Last season included a Christian living with a Muslim family, NYC-ers living on an environmentally friendly farm, Morgan and his then-fiance living on minimum wage for 30 days, etc. LOVE this show!

Well, not to sound too snobby or uppity, but The Office is stupid, low-brow humor. Just kinda turns me off. My Name is Earl is another one I just can't watch.
Mind you, can't get enougb Hot Shots or Airplane movies. But The Office and My Name is Earl are too stupid and low brow. Oy!!

Now, Gilmore Girls! Who was keeping THIS one a secret from me. Can't get enough of that show!

Oh, you must watch House. I've even got my husband watching it and he usually dislikes drama/medical/anything too fictional shows.
And I tivo'd the first season of The Closer that aired all day Sunday. I've been watching it a couple episodes at a time these past couple days and love it.

You might want to try Keen Eddie. It's another one of those series that got cancelled about five episodes in (like WonderFalls which I adored) and that they showed out of order so it was confusing (like Firefly which I really liked on DVD). It's about an American detective who ends up working in England. Classic fish out of water stuff.
Oh, if you haven't seen Veronica Mars, try that one. I know I'm too old to be their demographic, but I just love it.

Completely agree about Veronica Mars. Yeah, rumor has it that they were targeting the 18-34 demographic, but I'm 40 and I adore the show (and I've gotten a few 40-somethings hooked on it).
Great writing needs no target demographic.
P.S. Keen Eddie is a lot of fun too.

Keen Eddie, check.
I've just started watching Veronica Mars . . . do high school seniors really head to posh boutique hotels when they want to get it on these days?

Sign o' the times, babe. Around here, the cool kids rent hotel rooms/suites for prom night, graduation night, etc. They also routinely get thrown out of said hotel rooms/suites for noise, underage drinking, etc.
I'm a solid nine hours north of where Neptune is supposed to be and sadly inland, too, but maybe it's a California thing.

Oh, Keen Eddie. How I loved thee. That was my Cupid experience. Watched it when it first aired, got hooked and then they yanked it. Bastards.
Although I haven't watched it, I am really interested in watching Prison Break. Yes, predominantly for Wentworth Miller (the actor who plays his brother isn't too shabby either!), but I think the show has a bit of a Shawshank Redemption vibe to it and I love that movie, so I am going to give the show a shot later this summer.

You read my mind, Whitney. I am a freaking TV addict, unfortunately. Although what else are us moms supposed to do once the kids are in bed? Besides read, I mean. ;) Thank goodness for NetFlix! Don't let George do that to Alias. He will actually love it. We never saw it either and can't get enough of it... Jim was skeptical but is a BIG fan now. We just got two disks from NF this afternoon and you know we watch 3 hours in a shot! I agree on the Gilmore Girls too! How did I miss those two shows? I've also watched Grey's Anatomy, but I'll be a year behind thanks to starting so late. UGH

Here is a question I am wondering about. With missing GOOD tv shows and being able to watch season after season in one shot... does that not add to the addiction factor? I seriously freaked after watching all of Gilmore Girls in a month only to find out my local DIRECTV channels don't even provide WB! LOL I thought I'd mourn having to wait for a year but now I've moved on to Alias. I guess I'll find a replacement once we've finished that one but seriously, someone should do a study or something. :P

OMG, yesyesyes I love Grey's Anatomy in a very non-platonic sort of way. And I do also adore Hugh, I mean House... although I tend to watch the whole show trying to hear his real accent come through....

I'm still ticked that they took off Miss Match with Alicia Silverstone and Reunion that was on Fox. What's up with leaving us hanging? I agree that it gets harder to watch these new shows to be sucked into the plot and then have the networks pull the plug.
I have to say put Alias back up on the Netflix list when you get back from vacation. You will be totally addicted and you can't go wrong with a JJ Abrams shows (i.e., Felicity and Lost). Trust me on this one!

I've got to check out Grey's Anatomy and Veronica Mars this summer. I swear, I don't watch any current TV; I have no clue what's going on in prime time. I sit here with my DVDs of Buffy and Angel and am happy as a little clam (you've watched all 7 seasons of Buffy, haven't you?). I have Firefly out from Netflix right now so I can see if it measures up to the rest of the Whedon canon.
Lani's got me wanting to check out The Office and Wonderfalls, also.
I recommend checking out Sports Night. I loved that show until Aaron Sorkin left to do West Wing (and the people he left behind to run the show ruined all of the characters. I refused to watch West Wing EVER in protest). Some very good writing, lots of laughs, and some awesome "OOH! Wish I'd written that line!" moments.

I think I will steal your list for my own. I miss new tv in the summer too.

OOH! I've got another one for all you Buffy fans.
Check out the BBC's Manchild if you want to see Giles in a whole new light! I believe they only have Season One on DVD so far, so sadly you don't get the Anthony Michael Head nekkid rear view, but some of the stuff he goes through in Season One is pretty hilarious. Both Netflix and Blockbuster Online carry this.
