They're creepy and they're kooky

On a three-hour tour

I can't help it -- I 'm a pop culture junkie. I ADORE TV and movies and a whole heap of commercial fiction in my novels. (Yeah, yeah, I read that other stuff, too, tons of it, but we're talking about pop culture now, y'all.)

But today is a bleak and barren landscape of musical wasteland compared to the cultural icons of my childhood.
Here's the great sadness of my life as a mother: the enormous cultural black hole in which my poor, deprived children are living their childhoods. Yes, I'm talking about TV SHOW THEME MUSIC.

Where are today's great classics of modern music, such as:

Da da da dum.
Snap Snap
Da da da dum.
Snap Snap
Da da da dum, Da da da dum, Da da da dum.
Snap Snap.

Yep, it was definitely creepy and kooky, and I loved it.

Or, still to this day, does anybody want to go on a boat ride of ANY SORT for a THREE-HOUR TOUR???

Navy Guy, who even in his childhood, had a thing for blondes, reminds me of I DREAM OF JEANIE. And now he's downstairs playing this on his computer:

Darling, I love you but give me Park Avenue . . . .
Fresh Air
Times Square

(Yes, we have a Green Acres kind of marriage, too, but that's a subject for a whole 'nuther blog . . .) He's playing the BEVERLY HILLBILLIES theme song now but I refuse to write the lyrics of that one.

Or how about:

Sunday, Monday, Happy Days . . .
These days are our-our-our-ours, Happy Days

It's a generational thing, definitely. We had a brief but HORRIFYING period when Science Boy was INFATUATED with the giant purple dinosaur. This rang through our skulls with brain-splitting frequency:

I love you, you love me, we're a happy FAMILY,
With a great big hug and a kiss from me to you,
Your parents' brains are going to explode

Princess, luckily, skipped the Barney phase, but she's a huge fan of KIM POSSIBLE, which is at least girl-powerish:

I'm a teenaged average girl, and I'm here to save the world.

On the other end of the spectrum, I polled my mother, and she immediately listed her favorites:

Here's the story of a lovely lady who was bringing up three very lovely girls
All of them had hair of gold, like their mother, the youngest one in curls

The theme songs from BONANZA and HAWAII 5-0, even though they didn't have words, got whistled a lot when she was cleaning house.

And she called back to remind me of THE LOVE BOAT:

Love, exciting and new
Come aboard, We're expecting you

Oh, and this reminds me of my secret crush on Davy Jones:

Hey, hey, we're the MONKEES!!

And today, or at least fairly recently, there was CHEERS and FRIENDS and . . . Okay, I have to stop now - this could go on for DAYS!!!! But instead, why don't you tell me your faves?? Or the ones that make your brain hurt???

hugs,
Alesia
ps And Caridad's book is IN STORES NOW!!! It rocks!!! In a totally non-creepy and kooky way. :)

This blog was brought to you by Adiós to My Old Life, Caridad's rockin' young adult debut about a Latina girl who gets everything she's ever wanted... and then has to figure out what she needs.

As much as I love LOST, the theme music isn't exactly catchy. How do you go around humming that? Alfred Hitchcock, on the other hand, that works. Or the Twilight Zone. And every time I take more than three seconds to do something while someone is waiting for me, the Jeopardy tune. I could go on for days as well. There's The Apprentice, The Outer Limits, Star Trek, Flipper...

"Just'a good ol' boys
Never meanin' no harm.
Beats all you never saw
Been in trouble with the law
Since the day they was born"

"One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight,
Shlemiel, schlmozel, hassenfeffer incorporated..."

I do adore the rock n'roll cello that makes up the theme to "Angel"

But you're so right. TV these days is startlingly devoid of good theme songs.

"They're Pinky and the Brain
Just Pinky and the Brain.
One is a genius,
The other's insane."

Mercifully, we were spared the giant purple demon, but mostly because I simply didn't allow it. I was Mean Mommy that way. And at least the theme song to "Lilo and Stitch" is very cool.

These days, my favorite series theme songs belong to anime series, so they're either jazz or J-pop. Which is terrifying in its own right.

Neither of my two favorites have words: The Munsters and The Peanuts theme music. And who can resist doing the foot tapping thing to the My Three Sons music. (Btw, I'm not THAT old! MTS was in re-runs when I was a small child)

Do I dare bring up Rawhide? Yes. I am that old. Plus, there are busloads of Asian tourists who have photos of Thing Two, wearing nothing but a diaper and a pair of overalls, dancing wildly to the Rawhide theme on a covered bridge leading into the Rawhide Theme Park in Arizona. He was soooo blond and sooooo cute. We could make him dance just by singing it.

I woke up this morning with one of the Thomas the Train songs in my head . . . and not in a good way.

I just had this conversation with a good friend the other day. I mean, growing up, we sang all the songs, from the Flintstones to the Greatest American Hero (Believe it or not, I'm walkin on air, I never thought I could feel so free-ee-ee...).
My baby (age 5) sings songs now too. Which one does she know by heart? "CHARMED"! Can you believe that? She actully shushed me the other day when she heard the first two notes. "Momma, shhhh, Chaaawmed is on now..."

ooo, ooo, can I play? "Welcome Back Kotter" comes to mind. And as a VERY young child my sisters tell me that I use to stand in front of the TV, holding the skirt of my dress, swaying back and forth singing "Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning...No one you see, is smarter than he"... Yeah, I was pretty cute back then! *grin* And how 'bout the theme to those big puppet things " something something Drooper and Snort. Tra la la, lala la la, tra la la, lala la la." What the heck were they called? Loved that show!

Oh, I loved ALL those shows when I was a kid!!! I still sing the theme songs to my son (who thinks I've lost my mind). However, I HAVE introduced him to the fine viewing that is The Animaniacs...

We are Animaniacs.
We are zany to the max...

First of all, I got my book! Thank you, Alesia! I cannot wait to read it - it's coming to the Vineyard with me in two weeks for sure.

Barb, I read the Dukes of Hazard theme and I had to laugh. It's one of my little boy's favorite shows (he has several seasons on DVD already!) and Pinky and the Brain was on in the delivery room when he was born... there must be a connection between the two.

For some reason now, Punky Brewster is stuck in my head. *sigh*

"Hers, and hers, and his, Three's Company, too"

Yes, thank you very much, I've had cheesy theme song music running through my head for the past 24 hours!! lol.

What about saturday morning? I mean....

Spiderman! Spiderman!
Does whatever a spider can
Spins a web, Any size
Catches thieves,
Just like flies
There goes a Spiderman...

And
nanananananananananan - Batman!

Or perhaps my geekhood is showing.

Well, for me, no Saturday morning would be complete without,

"Ohhh Bwunhilda, you're so wuvwee...

Yes, I know it, I can't help it...

Ohhh Bwunhilda beeee my wife!"

Or conversely...

"Hello my baby, hello my honey, hello my ragtime gal...."

Finally, a topic I can pretty much relate to. Had a great time looking up themes for Alesia.

Here's one for you, The Courtship of Eddie's Father
"People let me tell ya bout my best friend.." Yes, sadly, I was a geek as a child also.

Sheri, the theme song you are thinking of is for The Banana Splits, another highly educational program.

Now, does anyone remember Johnny Sako and his Giant Robot?

Posted by: NavyGuy at June 27, 2006 7:54 PM

The Banana Splits--thank you!! Been driving me nuts... But I don't remember the Johnny Sako--I loved JOhnny quest however. And Ultraman. ANd who could foget the all time grates--"Speed Racer"? "Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer Go-ooo!!!" (sigh) Who didn't dream of having their own Mach V?!

Posted by: Sheri at June 27, 2006 9:39 PM

And who should check their post BEFORE hitting the send button? *waves hand sheepishly in air* Sheesh--how many spelling errors CAN I get into one post?! I forgot my fave song--how 'bout the theme to M*A*S*H?! Still love that show after all these years. I remember when they aired the very last episode--college classrooms all across my campus were empty as everyone cut class to watch Hawkeye and BJ say goodbye to Korea and everyone else. Not a dry eye in the room...

Ah HA. I knew if I went geeky enough, I'd finally bring Navy Guy out of the woodwork . . .
mwah ha ha.

Posted by: Alesia Holliday [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 28, 2006 1:55 PM

Oh, Navy Guy!

"He's a one boy cuddly toy, my up, my down, my pride, my joy." There's a great childhood memory!
