All by myself . . .

Don’t want to be all by myself . . . any more.

So you may have noticed that one of the Literary Chicks has not been abuzz with news of Nationals and the happenings in Atlanta and getting massages and drinking beaucoup glasses of wine with a bunch of hip writer chicks.

That’s right – me. I didn’t get to go, and I’m bitter, so I’m throwing myself a pity party.

Instead of partying with the rest of my L.C. friends, I’m baking here in the 100 degree Florida heat, trying to find things to eat that don’t involve turning the oven on and wondering how many episodes of Thomas the Train Sam can watch in one day before I officially slide into Bad Mommy territory.

I considered taking Sam to the zoo today, but it’s already too freaking hot to be outside. And then I thought about the beach, but schlepping my way on with toddler and gear in hand just takes too much energy. There’s always gymnastics class, but . . . no. Just no.

So now I’m thinking about just taking Sam to the mall, so I can buy sheets and Sam can ride the mini train. Which may be just about as much excitement as we two can take today.

So, tell me, my fellow lit chicks . . . is it this hot in Atlanta? Sigh. No, never mind, don’t tell me. You’re just going to say that you haven’t even noticed the heat, what with the iced daiquiris by the pool and all, and besides, you don’t have time to chat anyway, what with having to rush off to don your sequin dresses and tiaras for tonight’s do. And then I’ll be forced to pity eat my way through an enormous king sized chocolate bar.

So take lots of pictures, and drink lots of wine, and win lots of awards to cover us all in glory! I want to hear all about it when you get back.

We MISS YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And yes, it is miserably freaking hot. And humid. And just . . . HOT.

Well, Whitney, I'm such a loser that although I'm on vacation, I keep compulsively checking the LC blog for news of Atlanta. Sigh.... and if it was over 100 degrees, I would totally take my kids to the mall. It's air-conditioned and full of self-pity food like giant pretzels, chocolate-chip cookies, and ice cream. How can you go wrong?

I am comforting myself with the thought that I will be at the NJ RWA conference in October, where the weather will be much more reasonable. Will you be there, too?

Whitney, I totally feel for you, babe! We are having our own heat wave on the Left Coast--I think we are going on our 13th or 14th day of 100+ degrees here in the Central Valley. I think the hottest day was somewhere around 113*--I don't care where you live, that is just freakin' HOT!!! I have been going out to the ranch once a day the past couple of days and hosing down my horse with cold water because he keeps over-heating. The kids just lay around the house because the pool is like 94* and feels like a bath tub. All the dogs are in the house also, and here I sit, recovering from hand surgery, stuck with the whole clan up my backside--count your blessings that you only have Sam to contend with! I have FOUR teenagers in the house with me, and no, Calgon ain't gonna cut it! We are supposed to leave on vacation next Tuesday, but with the horse getting sick I am a little hesitant to leave--hoping the weather guy is right and this heat wave is gonna break this weekend!! (At least we don't have the humidity to contend with--New Orleans 'bout killed me last year! Gah! How do you Southern folk STAND it?!)

So Whitney, babe, go to the mall, let Sam ride the train, then come home, put him down for a nap and pop open a wine cooler and toast the Chicks in Atlanta. I hear that one of these RWA conferences is coming out my way in a year or two--you and I will have to make up for missing this one then!! *wink* Cheers!

Yes, San Francisco in 2008, I think. Of course, you know SF is going to pull out all the stops and push the triple digits just for us. Maybe we'll be lucky and have fog.

I feel for you with a little one in this heat. My mom and I are pretty much just lying around in the AC, trying to recover from the last bout of stomach flu before the next one runs us over. It probably isn't true, but I tell myself it wouldn't be so bad if only it were cooler. At least I wouldn't ahve to go out and water the plants and make sure the wild kingdom has something to drink.

We're doiong a bangup job of moaning. LOL!

Well I'm happy you are still here... because I'm not in Atlanta either... and you have to count up the DAYS you allow your child to watch tv all day long before you can slide in to bad mommy territory. Trust me on that one!

Oh, you mean they AREN'T supposed to watch TV all day and all night?! Oops! Keeps 'em quiet, though...

Oh Whitney, I know what you mean. I stayed away from just about every site on the Web last week, just to avoid Atlanta-envy! Now I'm trying to catch up with it all. How pathetic is that.
Hey, Rebecca, I'll be at the NJ conference too. I just got an e-mail saying that they FINALLY received my registration fee (yeah, I forgot to mail it, so it sat on my desk for a month until they e-mailed!). Maybe I'll get to meet you there!
Have to say though, the one site I kept up with this week was the HeWrote/SheWrote blog. While Jenny and Bob did post from Atlanta, the CherryBombs who didn't make it to the conference threw one heck of a pity party in the blog's comments section. That was the only place I could stand being all week, and only because I got to drown my sorrows with friends who also couldn't be there. Yeah, virtual beer isn't as good as the real thing, but hey, I'm a writer, I could imagine it tasted pretty good, right?
