Losing It

Sunglasses, Sippy Cups, My Mind.

I’m not the sort of person who randomly loses things. I manage to keep track of my wallet and keys and assorted personal belongings. If something in the house does go missing, I usually just blame my three-year-old, Sam. (I used to blame George, but he gives me crap, so now I blame the resident who hasn’t been trained in the art of litigation).

And it’s not like I don’t have some basis for accusing my son. Sam went through a period of time where he’d steal random things and hide them around the house, like my plastic egg beater (used for scrambling eggs in a non-stick pan) and the spiral notebooks where I make notes on the books I’m working on. The egg beater was always stashed under the cushion of our leather club chair. The notebooks he liked to stick under his bed.

But there are two items that keep going missing that I don’t think Sam’s responsible for. Or, at least, I certainly haven’t found them in any of his usual hidey-holes.

The first are sippy cups. For those of you who haven’t gone through the boot camp of toddler rearing, sippy cups are ingenious cups with caps that keep kids from being able to spill liquid. Or, at least, that’s what they are in theory. My experience with sippy cups is that they’re really only about fifty percent effective, and that any small child really worth his salt who is intent on covering your new sofa in apple juice will find a way to do so.

However, I like the concept of sippy cups, and appreciate them when they do work. I have a friend who insists that by the time a child turns three, they should be weaned off of them. Yeah, well, that’s not going to happen here. I like my furniture too much. So sippy cups are still very much in use in this house. That is, when I can find one.

Because here’s the weird thing: although I have bought dozens – literally, dozens – of sippy cups over the past three years, at four dollars a pop. . . I never seem to have any. It’s like I buy them, Sam uses them once or twice . . . and then they disappear.

I know it seems like Sam’s the logical culprit, and that somewhere in the house or car, there’s probably a whole stash of them, now black with mold. But I don’t think so. I’ve looked everywhere, and I swear – the damn things have just disappeared.

And, also: sunglasses. Another item I acquire in bulk. I never buy expensive sunglasses, because I don’t have an expensive sunglasses life. I have a toss-the-sunglasses-in-my-purse-along-with-the-keys-that-inevitably-scratch-them-up sort of life. Since I know this about myself, once or twice a year, I go to T.J. Maxx, and pick out three or four pairs, that I put into rotation. And then, six months later, when the last of these sunglasses have disappeared, and I’m getting headaches from squinting into the sun while I drive around, I go back and buy more.

Which is fine – I’m not going to get upset about a missing ten dollar pair of sunglasses. But I have to wonder – where are they going?

Is there an actual black hole in my house, where all of the sippy cups and sunglasses and receipts for items I want to return disappear into? And if so, why are these the only items that go missing?

So what goes missing in your house . . . and where does it go?

It's a hole in the space-time continuum, and other items that I'm SURE are there:
One of each of Princess's pairs of socks. Try sending your daughter to school in one purple and one blue sock, since that's one of the closest matches she has left.

All pens that actually work. Except the pink sparkly gel pens that you can't actually write checks or notes to teachers with.

Anything I'm DESPERATE to get my hands on in five minutes or less so I can get out the door to an important meeting . . .

Your glasses are probably snuggling with my socks, while my pens rest in your sippy cups. Laughing at us.

Hair clips and Chapstick. Never do these last until I can throw them away, but every few months I have to buy more. They must be with your sippy cups (which, I agree, do rock).

The little black porous covers for my iPod earbuds. They escape in the night, I swear.

OMG. Spoons. I swear to God, spoons go missing in my house. I think it's Fish, not the girls. I think he brings one to work, forgets it there, or something. But... yeah. Spoons.

Anyway - it's not just you, Whit! ;)

"OMG. Spoons. I swear to God, spoons go missing in my house."

I have been reading and loving this blog for months, but I have never commented before, but I HAD to respond to this.

Growing up, my 3 sisters and I were constantly in trouble because spoons were always disappearing. We are now all adults and have been out of the house for more than a decade, but spoons are still disappearing from my mother's house! 32+ years later, no spoon has ever been found either. None of my sisters nor I have ever had any problems in our own homes with utensils (and I have moved 11 times in 10 years). We are convinced that her spoons have all been sacrificied to the dishwasher gods!

Personally, I used to have issues with keeping wallets, purses, keys, and hairbrushes, but have somehow finally out-grown that phase. Unfortunately, I am still horrible with sunglasses. I break, scratch beyond usage, or lose at least 1 pair a month, so I stock up at Target or Walmart for $5 per pair. ;)

Socks. My 5 year old loves socks. He must have socks on at all times of the day. (I think he'd wear them in the bath if he thought I'd allow it) I buy socks and socks and more socks. I've started buying socks at Costco for him. And yet, there are exactly 2 (non-matching) socks left in his drawer this morning.

Where are they going?? I buy them 12 (or More) at a time. I should have a room full of socks by now. But no, I look everywhere and they're just gone.

Helen, the sock monster is eating all of our socks. Very very weird. And if it helps, I often find Princess's in the weirdest places, like under her bed, rolled up in her hats, stuffed in the Barbie case, etc. etc. Look the last place you'd expect and maybe . . .

Disappearing socks, yes, I'm familier with this. Luckily we have adopted a system to cope with this problem. We don't match socks. We just grab the first two out of the pile that look similar. Of course this only works if all your socks are white. Ours all kinda off-whitish. Discusting, but equally interchangeable.

And yes, I am not much of a housewife - but we don't have kids yet so I figure my husband still has time to learn.

Don't feel bad about still using sippy cups at three, Whitney! I don't think the kidlet gave his up until he was almost six. Partly because he liked them and partly because he still spilled. Of course, at 7 he still spills but I think I got rid of the last of them when we remodeled the kitchen this year. And, like you, many disappeared on me. I should have had dozens to get rid of instead of the paltry 3 that I found.

And who said spoons? I recently had to buy new silverware because there were hardly any spoons left. Personally, I think the kidlet kept throwing them away by accident...

Spoons. And forks. And tupperware.
Of course, I know it's the kids. The silverware is great for digging holes outside, and the tupperware is a great storage container for all of that dirt. Ugh, it kills me!
Socks are another thing that walks off.
And for me, and this is the really big one, it's my Clinique Black Honey Almost Lipgloss. I buy 2 at a time, every few months. I have never, in 12 years, EVER finished one of those. They just freakin disappear! It's very frustrating, since I usually know exactly where they are supposed to be, but when I go to get one, they are just GONE.

Sunglasses, money, socks, shirts, sivlerware (or any dish for that matter). I loose everything. I have come to accept the fact that if my son or my husband is missing something that they will blame me even though I haven't touched said thing, ever. I almost always find what I am missing eventually but still.... It is quite frustrating. One time I found a $20 bill in a pair of shorts that I had not worn for a year.

Thing One used to take items he liked (sets of keys, particulary tasty sippy cups of milk, the odd rock or stick) and stash them inside his Weeblo Firestation. It took a while to figure that out and wasn't a very nice surprise once we did.

I have one word for you. Socks.

These days, for Oh Patient One, Teenager No 2 and myself, I buy two dozen pairs of the same socks in the same shade. But they still go varying shades of grey at different times...
