Foot Fashion Faux Pas

Missteps

I am so not a fashionista. It is perhaps why Amy's post earlier this week about the endless black sweaters struck such a chord with me. Oh, yeah, the black sweaters, the black shoes, the black dresses. I know they'll work on me and be generally inoffensive and they'll match. So bring 'em on.

Still, there are areas that baffle me. The one I've been contemplating recently: foot fashions.

This is probably because I'm STILL not over that whole plantar fasciitis thingie that appears to be even harder to come back from than it is to spell. Add to that the fact that I dropped one of the #*$&*( soccer goals I was supposed to be locking up on my OTHER foot. At any rate, I look longingly these days at about seventy-five percent of my shoe collection as they gather dust near the charming shoe trees I purchased just so I could dump my shoes next to them and still have a mess in my bedroom. But now there are shiny things extending up above the mess! It's much better! Really! But I digress.

So, now to my foot fashion questions, chicklets. I know you'll have the answers.

I know that you are not to wear socks or hose with sandals unless you are my Grandpa Morris who when he hit his nineties could only stand to wear birkenstocks. Everything else hurt his feet too much. And he got cold a lot so he needed to wear them with socks. Frankly, the way my family works, if my grandfather had said he wanted to wear underpants on his head we would have all fought to be the one to lovingly place his boxers on his sweet bald pate. But I digress. Again.

No socks with sandals. Got it. But do slingbacks count as sandals? Is it okay to wear pantyhose with them?

What about toe rings? Cute and flirty or trailer park?

Ankle bracelets? Sexy and enticing or, once again, trailer park? What about the people who trap them under their hose? Surely that's forbidden, isn't it? Or am I being harsh?

Help me put my best foot forward, chicklets. Do us all a favor. Educate me. Please.

Trap anklets under their hose? That's just bad. I have a few anklets that I will wear, usually I got them from the beach and I'm wearing them at the beach.

I don't do toe rings, but see no problem with them on others.

Slingbacks and hose, or socks? Umm, I'm gonna pass on this one. I wouldn't, but that's just me.

Of course, I'm new to this whole shoe thing. Yes, I've worn them for years, but I've never really thought about them until recently. Now, I simply love them, and spend a small part of every week in some shoe store or another, drooling. I don't buy many, since I really don't have a place to wear them, but my, it's fun to look!

I make it easy. I don't wear hose. I wear tights with my boots. But I swore off wrestling my body into hose a long time ago. Now I just choose between pants or tights when its cold. Of course I live in the south which means there's not that many days I have to worry about it.

I'm no fashion maven, myself, but here's my take.

Slingbacks with hose, is okay as long as you stayed with a neutral colors.

Toe rings I think are fun. But only one, more than that is truly a fashion no-no.

Ankle Bracelets again, can be flirty and fun, if you again wear... one. AND you're right, never, ever under the pantyhouse.

Mulitple toe rings and ankle bracelets, and heaven forbid, worn together on the same foot, such a Fashion Don't. Put that look together and you're only an Elvis tattoo away from looking at some double-wides.

Speaking as someone short of stature and largish of foot (no, I'm no telling, LOL) I do everything to minimize foot size. Cute (neat, usually black) shoes, no toe rings or ankle bracelets (so as not to draw attention to big feet).

So there you have my feet and shoe policy.

Well, I guess I'm a lot like Grandpa Morris because I live in my Birkenstocks. Only without the socks. In the winter, I switch from my Birk sandals to my Birk clogs and typically add a pair of lightweight socks of appropriate color. Of course, I think that this has caused my feet to grow even more than they did while I was pregnant because I just went up another half a size in regular shoes. (Either that or they're making shoes smaller).

I would say that neutral (tan, beige, etc.) hose with slingbacks are fine. I see that all the time.

Personally, I'm a big fan of ankle bracelets and love to make them. But I generally mostly wear them only in summer (who can see them under pants, anyway?) and they should *never* be trapped under hose. Of course, I never wear hose so this isn't an issue for me.

Cindi, your crack about being only an Elvis tattoo away from looking at double-wides cracked me up.

So the Elvis tattoo is NOT a good idea? Darn! I thought it was going to look so good.

*if you do go for hose & slingbacks, better make it a fantabulous combo, or it will suck and look orthopedic. i would make it into a statement with really well-chosen colors, styles, etc.
*toe rings? sure if you're wearing sufficiently sensual sandals and clothing to go with, or if it's some funky sportoid thang to go with a sportoid "i like back-from-the-future-adidas" get-up. otherwise, avoid like bird flu.
*same with ankle bracelets. cannot be at war with the shoe or look, do not strangle under hose, make it striking or strike it from a public look.

imho -- you can get away with nearly everything if you have basic color and texture harmonizing, or deliberately contrasting.
