Upgraded!
So, where's my champagne?
Greetings, dear Chicklets, I'm just back from my New Jersey trip, where I got to hang with all my New Jersey friends, as well as Lani, Alesia, and a whole host of other buddies, and I'm a bit punchy from my redeye flight. But before I drag my jet-lagged self off to the shower and go bed for a snooze, I have a little travel tale for you.
"Here she goes again," I hear you all cry. "Michelle always has a mini disaster when she travels. What did she get up to this time?"
Well...
On the outward bound trip I was constantly thwarted by a bunch of extremely large, extremely loud Dutch men (which you can read about in Alesia's comments section, here), so when I got to the airport yesterday, I fully expected to be thwarted again by that same group of extremely large, extremely loud Dutch men. I mean, that would just be my luck, no?
Wrong!
As I checked in I got UPGRADED! YAY!!!! I was no longer a regular coach traveller, I was now an ELITE traveller. YAY!!!
As the nice security people hastened me to the front of the line and through the elite security check, I fondly imagined a larger, more comfortable seat on the plane.
And as the nice airline crew invited me to board the plane ahead of the travellers in coach, I fondly imagined glasses of free champagne and an a la carte menu. I fondly imagined all of the celebs who would also be travelling in elite.
Wrong again!
What ELITE actually meant: I was seated closer to the front of the plane. I got to sit in row 26 instead of row 40 something. Oh, well, at least the plane was half empty so I got to spread out over three seats.
Have you ever been upgraded? I mean, what does a girl have to do to get that champagne?

Here's a twist for you - I've been downgraded!
Many years ago, Tall and Handsome used to work for a major airline (now since defunct)and one of the perks was that we could fly first-class anywhere in the world for free!!! Cool, no? Well, one of the drawbacks however, was that we had to fly standby and should an actual paying customer want those seats, it was to the back of the bus for us. IF there were any coach seats to be had. LOL
I only got to fly first-class once in my life and I had to buy the darn ticket to do so. :-)

How disappointing! I'll buy you champers next time I see you. 'Kay?

What crazy airline people. They obviously don't know a real "Elite" person when they see one. You should have been sitting in first class, sipping your bubbly, next to some famous and gorgeous creature. Shame on them!!!
Michelle, it was truly a pleasure to meet you, and to have the chance to speak with you. You were one of the highlights of my NJ trip! I already finished "Confessions of a Serial Dater" (on Sunday, actually!) and loved it. I think I'm going to have to break down and order your other books for sure now.
Thanks so much for your welcoming attitude. You and Lani were so very kind, and it just helped to re-inforce to me how lucky I am to be part of RWA.

I used to get upgraded to first-clas all the time when Mr. Tall and I were dating long distance. I had so many frequent flier miles, the check-in staff at Continental actually knew me by name.
But that I'm moved and married, I lost my gold status and I'm back in (sob) coach. Have you ever seen that Seinfeld episode: "I've flown first class, Elaine, I know what it's like and you can NEVER GO BACK! Don't make me go back there! Please!"

Alesia - ditto, you, hon :-)
Cindi - hugs on being downgraded :-(
Eileen - LOL, we'll definitely drink champagne next time...
Dee - it was an absolute delight to meet you, too, and I'm so thrilled that you enjoyed Confessions.
Beth - you are my kind of gal!
Michelle, still jet-lagged and not quite back in the zone

Michelle it was a pleasure to meet you at the book signing in NJ. I was upgraded to First Class when our previous flight was cancelled due to snow in Atlanta. We left Daytona Beach the next morning in seats 1A and 1B. Big deal we got coffee (it was early in the morning) and orange juice. We put our seats upright in preparation to take off, the pilot taxied and lifted off and my seat flew backwards. The damn seat was broken so every time he took off (twice) my seat went back. I immediately reported it to the flight attendent after the first incident but she couldn't fix it and there were no seats to put me in so too bad. Delta apologized and gave me a free flight but I couldn't take advantage of it. So upgrading isn't all it is cracked up to be I guess.

Penny! It was so lovely to meet you and your daughter at the conference last weekend, too! (That flamingo eye patch was so cute.)
And big hugs on the broken seat story. Sheesh, being upgraded is definitely not what it's cracked up to be, is it? Although Oh Patient One has been upgraded on occasion when traveling through work, and he has stories of champagne and a la carte menus. He even brought home the a la carte menu for me...
