Casa de Fish Thanksgiving Live Blog #2

It ain't cooking if it don't smoke.

Time: 11:58 am

Things Accomplished: Whipped more cream. By hand. Don't believe me?

Turkey is about to come out of the brine and go into the oven, so we're at a steady Turkey 0, Lani 1. Will let you know how the process of washing off the brine (turkey cavities! argh!) goes.

In the meantime, Fish started a fire. The good kind.

Oh. and I got the table cleared.

As you can see, we didn't get exactly to the sweeping yet. Yargh.

Fights Had:
Since last blog: 1
Daily Total: 2

Random Quote Pulled From Fight:

Me: If you're not feeling good, we have some cold medicine.
Fish: I don't take drugs for medicinal purposes.
Me: Take the damn medicine or you're going to make the rest of us miserable, damnit. Stupid man.

Things Forgotten: Possibly the potato masher. Can't find it, but it might be in one of the still unpacked boxes in the garage.

Who's Going to The Store: Um... that's be Fish.

Glasses of wine drunk: Still none. I realize I'm not living up to my reputation. Damn.

Grateful for: Internet sites that tell you exactly how to roast a turkey. I've been kinda fuzzy on the details up to now.

And Dee - thanks for your kind offer of T-Day assistance! Don't be surprised if your phone rings! I'll try to have some wine first though so it's more fun for you. If you get a recording device ready, it might even be blackmail-worthy.

Go, Lani!

You are going to brine/baste/bake the hizzell out of that turkey! And your whipped cream is a thing of beauty. You could have your own show on the Food Channel. For real.

I'm a little disappointed by Fish's outfit, although if he hasn't swept yet, perhaps there's still a chance for the French maid's outfit?

And BTW, Go Lani! Go Lani! Go Lani! That turkey doesn't stand a chance.

If you can't find the masher, an electric mixer will work just fine for the potatoes. What makes potatoes absolutely excellent--add a little bit of turkey/chicken broth to the potatoes instead of butter before you whip them. The flavor is incredible and it's especially nice if you have family members who don't like gravy--yeah, that would be my youngest. Go figure!

Wow. A TABLECLOTH! Y'all's gettin' fancy on us, Miss Lani! *chortle* Fish gets points for making a fire--but where's the maid's uniform?! I'm so disappointed... *sigh*

Our drama this morning--the neighbor's cat is out. He's strictly a house cat. Looks a LOT like my cat without all the long hair, but I digress. I am assuming that there is a fight at their house this morning ("Get that damn cat out of the stuffing") because She has told my daughters that He throws the cat out when it annoys him and She has asked if we would kindly bring said cat back if we see him outside...

Lani, Lani!! Can I just say how HAPPY I am that you're blogging Turkey Day. Makes me feel like I'm there. I can smell the smoking turkey drippings from here. Okay, not quite yet, but I will.

But mostly, it makes me feel like I'm spending Thanksgiving with YOU, rather than relatives I'm stuck with. (Note to any of my relatives reading this: I don't mean you. I mean those other relatives.)

And you're much farther ahead than me if you have your table cleared off! Our dining room table hasn't seen the light of day since Dec 25, 2004, the last time I did Christmas dinner. ;-)

I second Sheri's idea of adding stuff to the potatoes. I generally go for buttermilk and sour cream, it just makes them creamier. And butter. Lots and lots of butter!
I'll be waiting for the call, Lani. And just for the record...
I'm already on my second glass of wine. You're behind, girlfriend!

You whipped cream by hand? What are you? Some kind of cooking ringer? A member of the East German Olympic Dessert Team?
