The Grinch and Me

Otherwise known as Holiday Traditions I Just Don’t Get

So last night, I put up the Christmas Tree, while George and Sam lay on the sofa coughing, and wheezing, and generally feeling crappy. George did manage to stay vertical long enough to wrestle with the lights on the tree (query: why is my supposedly pre-lit faux tree only lighting up halfway?). He even managed a few feeble curses, but it was obvious his heart wasn’t in it.

I like decorating the tree on my own, though. It allows me to be a control freak about the placement of the ornaments. Otherwise, I have to smile through clenched teeth when all of the silver snowflakes end up grouped together in a clump, and then sneak in and fix it when no one is looking. So trimming the tree as a family? Very Normal Rockwell, I know, but highly overrated.

Here are some other holiday traditions I don’t get:

1. Caroling. Come on. It’s just embarrassing, both for you to sing in public, and for me to have to stand there at my door pretending to enjoy it. Please spare us both.

2. Egg Nog. Now normally I’m all for anything involving a healthy dollop of rum, but when it comes down to it, you’re really just drinking egg-laced cream. And not in a good way.

3. Decorations. Sure, some decorations are fun and festive. But it’s a short, slippery slope straight towards Tackyville. Twinkle lights? Fine. Giant plastic Santas and Snowmen cavorting on your roof? Never a good idea.

So tell me, my chicklets . . . what holiday rituals do you find overrated?

I love eggnog with spiced rum and have a light-up Santa and polar bear on my front lawn! My house itself will look like the North Pole exploded in it within the next day or so. You grinchies are so sad! :)

I could do without the whole christmas tree thing.

I know how bad that sounds, but I'm single and I live alone. The dog and cat don't care about it. As a matter of fact, it'll just be something else for me to yell at them about.

If I could get away without the rest of the family giving me grief, I wouldn't even bother. And even though we aren't doing Christmas at my house, I'll never hear the end of it if I don't put it up. I even get grief because I don't want to put it up till next weekend!

I'm trying to think because I will freely admit that I love pretty much all about Christmas. Except maybe the commercialism. And having to spend it with my in-laws. But other than that... I mean, I like the decorating. I adore Christmas music (and my radio station does a month long of nothing but holiday songs, starting the week of Thanksgiving). It's not Christmas unless I've watched Rudolph and the Grinch and The Year Without a Santa Claus (how can you not love Snow Miser and Heat Miser??) I even generally (except, for some reason, this year) enjoy Christmas shopping. And there is nothing better than 3 whole weeks off of work!

I don't know about you, but I feel that Christmas cards are the bane of my existance. They are such a hassle- buying them, writing "generalized personal messages", addressing them, mailing them, going to the store to buy more because you *forgot* to include Auntie So-and-so, having to re-address those that were returned in the mail to you because So-and-so moved and forgot to notify you... I'm exhausted just thinking about it!!!

Definitely the movies... the only one I bother watching each year is National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. LOL Oh and the politically correct thing, why can't I say Merry Christmas to someone if it is what *I* celebrate!? Go ahead, say Happy Kwanza or Happy Chanukah (etc) right back... I won't mind!

Okay, I'm all for Santa and Rudolph on the lawn. And I even think those giant inflatable snowglobes are kind of cute even if they do deflate during the day.

But I have to draw the line at Homer Simpson in a santa suit and a giant Scooby Doo. Can someone please explain to me what they have to do with Christmas?

Well, my family is from Chicago, so I love gaudy, colorful decorations. We did the silver tinsel (gasp!) on the tree and everything. Tis the season to go way over the top.

But I have never understood the appeal of eggnog. Are there really eggs in there? Are they raw? Alesia can have my share!

You know, I click yes, remember me and it NEVER does. Blogger's the same way. I must totally be the most forgettable person on the web. Sigh.

I'm with Alesia, LOVE egg-nog, Love the blow-up Santa's, and all the lights. In fact, that's what my house has all over it right now. Except the Santa is still deflated under a few inches of snow. BUT, he will rise again, oh yes, lovelies, he will!

Charity,

Don't take it personally. Typekey never remembers me either and for a while was actually making me sign in twice.

I love egg nog, too. I'm not crazy about the calorie count in it though. I also like the Christmas carols. Just you all wait until you hear me do Joy to the World on my autoharp!

I love putting up the Christmas tree and maybe some snowflakes in the window. I am also a huge fan of all the christmas presents all wrapped up in different paper. It makes if seem festive and I love sorting through them all and being the Present elf on xmas morning.
One thing that I dont get is why radio stations decide to start playing xmas songs starting right after Thanksgiving...Give us a little time to rest before we have to start thinking about another holiday!

I like it all this year, but that's because I'm ahead of schedule this year. Catch me next year when I'm behind and I'll hate everything.

I used to love X-mas. Really. I was born on the Winter Solstice and I would really get into it. Blech. Not so much anymore. My grandma, now SHE gets into X-mas! Her whole place looks like a bunch of elves threw up in it. I must say however, I do love my eggnog. I like to think of it as a "protein drink".

Is there a difference between what the US calls eggnog and what the UK calls eggnog? To me it is a liquer that is part egg, part brandy, and part Other Delicious Stuff. A famous brand over here (which just happens to be Dutch) is Advocaat. Yum.

I love everything about Christmas--as long as I don't have to do anything! If elves showed in the middle of the night and put the lights on the house, put the Xmas tree together and decorated it, and put the rest of the decorations up AND came back and took them all down after the Big Day, I would be like "Hey, have at it!". But they don't and I am left each year to lug out the boxes of stuff and decide what i want to use and what I want to stick back on the shelf for another year... And realizinig, as I do so, that the more stuff I put up, the more stuff I have to pack away again. Last year the tree just had lights. No ornaments. Just lights, and that was because it is fake and comes pre-lit!!

As for carols--I love them! I HAVE to play them to get into the mood, and it reminds me of being a kid. My mom loves music and always had something playing on our huge old stereo. As a kid my uncle would pack me and my cousins into the back of his pickup and we would cruise through our small town caroling up a storm! My cousin and I used to love to sing together (we have nice voices) and people loved to hear us. That was a lot of fun...

Eggnog--now THAT I find to be truly disgusting! Anything that you have to put a raw egg in and consume just makes me want to yark! Give me a hot toddy anyday! *grin*
