A little luxury goes a long way
Especially when it’s brushed into your follicles
We all have little indulgences, even notorious skinflints like me. Some people will shell out for fine wine, designer denim, fresh flowers in the family room. My personal weakness just happens to be…my hair.
Yes, I’m a little embarrassed to type that. But come on—hair is something that stays with you 24/7/365. Bad hair can put a damper on an otherwise lovely outfit, and good hair…well, that’s priceless. Just ask Mr. Tall. Every year he’s stymied as to what to get me for Christmas, but this December, I made a specific request. My life, I decided, would not be complete until I had my very own Mason Pearson hairbrush.
“Dear God,” Mr. Tall said when he noticed the price tag. “Is that thing made of platinum and unicorn hair?”
“Boar bristles,” I corrected. “My hairstylist says Mason Pearson is the very best. He says it’s the Rolls Royce of hairbrushes and I can pass it down to my grandchildren.”
“Don’t get me started on your hairstylist,” Mr. Tall said. (I also believe in splurging on cut and highlights. And deep conditioning treatments. And scalp massages.) “And passing a hairbrush on to anyone is gross and unhygienic. Also, you may have noticed that we don’t have children, let alone grandchildren.”
“Fine, then,” I said. “Go wander around the mall with all the other hapless husbands on Christmas Eve. Give my best to the clerk at the jewelry store.”
Guess what was wrapped up under the tree come Christmas morn? And you guys, it rocks. I don’t know what exactly Mason Pearson does to that boar bristle, but this brush adds volume and sleekness like nobody’s business. I feel slightly calmer and prettier every time I use it. Shallow? Perhaps. But we all need little ways to pamper ourselves in this scary, chaotic world.
So what’s your weakness? Eating out? Exotic travel? Fine chocolates? Home décor? Mani-pedis at the spa?

I need to get the Diva one of those. Her father pretty much had Mr. Tall's reaction, but I just looked at him and said he could brush her hair.
My weakness (like this will come as a big surprise) is good clothing and shoes. Especially the shoes. I'm convinced it's genetic. My grandmother had the bug, so does my mother.
But they have to be on sale. Because I'm weird that way.

You know, my hair tends to pull the centers out of brushes like that. I end up with the pad with the bristles stuck in my hair and the handle off on its own somewhere. Of course, I've never used a Mason Pearson brush. Maybe they have better sticky stuff to keep it all in one piece.

I splurge on experiences. Why rent a horror movie when I can watch it on IMax in 3D! Why go to the movies this weekend when I can go to Disneyland! Why go to Disneyland this spring break when I can go to NYC!

Eillen,i had a similar experiences like yours, the difference is i got the whole brush stuck in my hair, and i couldn't get it off after 30mins struggle. so i had to put on my coat with a hood(to make sure no one could recognize me), with the stupid brush hanging on my hair, went to the cloest hair salon downstairs to ask help from a barber. it was really embarrassed but funny to answer "what can i help you" while other customers smiling at me, and apprenntly they could tell why i was there. lucking thing is the barber saved my hair instead of cutting them all.
i've shorted my all weaknesses(movies, clothes, basketball stuff, cosmetics, after paying for my new small apartment. but m still on the question should i go to a gym? i think 80% is yes:~~~~~)

Kobe,
That's hysterical! I'm glad he didn't have to cut your hair off to get the brush out!

I agree! I agree that one of my indulgences is hair cuts. I - supreme bargain hunter - pay good bucks for my hair cuts, because I have tons of hair and it's thick and curly in places and a lot of people did things that only looked good with forty minutes of care - which is about thirty five more than I spend.
I have also broken many brushes like that. I have given in. My hair does not like brushes, only the occasional wide tooth comb. Sorry, hair.
And yeah, books, yarn, shoes, those too.

Oh, books, of course!
But my biggest indulgence is massages. I go once a month, always on a Friday, because that's when Jonathon works. He is incredible. I work as a waitress, full time mom of 6 that homeschools, a book reviewer, and a writer, so I get all kinds of aches and pains. Jonathon makes them all go away. Really, the man is a miracle worker. Plus, "Massage Envy" is next door to a bookstore, so after Jonathon makes it all better, I go over and grab a new book. It's my favorite day of every month!

Volume? It adds volume? When you have fine, wimpy hair, volume is a gem beyond price. Anything that adds volume is worth it's weight in gold. Perhaps in platinum.
And why, oh, why does Typekey continue to hate me and refuse to validate me when I login? Why?

Beth, I just had to tell you that my new Mason Pearson brush came at the beginning of the week and I *adore* it. I also told hubby to never ever ask me how much it cost. Wisely, he just rolled his eyes and let me go on my way, squealing with excitement about my new brush. I swear it really does make my hair look fuller!
You are my new favorite person!
