A quick glimpse into the crystal ball
I see many deadlines in my future
I don’t believe in psychics. Okay, actually, I DO kind of believe in psychics, but only the not-for-profit kind that aid crime investigations and find lost kids and stuff (see: “Psychic Detective” on Court TV). And I do believe that some people are much more intuitive than others, and can sort of “tune in” to nonverbal communication on a much higher plane than average. What I don’t believe in are the so-called fortune tellers that hang up their shingles on Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles or offer to read your tarot cards at Renaissance Faires. And forget about those trumped up horoscopes in the daily newspapers.
And yet.
I can never resist having my palm read or my tea leaves analyzed. I realize, deep in my heart, that it’s hooey and that the “psychic” in question is just watching my facial expressions for cues, but somehow, I keep coming back for more. Maybe that’s the human condition in a nutshell: we KNOW that everyone else is just as clueless as we are, but we desperately want to believe that someone has the answers. And the answers, of course, are always reassuring. You will find fame and fortune. The ex who broke your heart will come back. You will live a long and healthy life.
I used to scoff at the idea that a streetcorner psychic would say anything that wasn’t 100% optimistic. Then, right after we graduated college, my friend Trish and I sat down with a seer in Minneapolis. And this psychic had good news and bad news for Trish. The good news was, Trish was bound to be spectacularly successful in her chosen career. The bad news? Trish was never going to find “great love.”
Trish was outraged. I tried to comfort her with the thought that that at least she’d have the means to outfit herself in the chicest of outfits while lounging around her swank bachelorette pad drinking Cristal, but she was having none of it. She wanted great love, and how dare this hussy deny her?
I got a reading that day, too, but I’ve honestly forgotten the details. Except for “literature and scholarship.” Trish was going to get the choice real estate and the Hermes handbags, and I was headed for vast horizons of literature and scholarship. Rip-off!
Seven books and a dissertation later, I have to give that psychic her props. But she didn’t say anything about dogs. I’m pretty sure the psychic detective would have zeroed right in on the dogs. (“I see an office…jammed with advance reader’s copies and…and…my God, would you look at the shedding? There’s fur everywhere!”)
So the question du jour: have you ever had a psychic reading and if so, did the predictions come to pass?
This book was brought to you by Alesia’s new book, written as Alyssa Day,
ATLANTIS RISING. Welcome to the dark side!!

OMG YES! There was a local woman who everyone had heard of but nobody seemed to know how to find. After several dozen phone calls I finally struck gold. I went alone to this house in a shady part of town. Once I sat down she pointed to pile of cards and told me to "..pick thirty, then nine, then five." So I did.
She picked up the cards, looked at them and said, "You're pregnant. It's a boy. The father is going to resist this pregnancy but he'll come around later. Oh, by the way, don't worry, you'll get your Medi-Cal"
Was she right? To the letter! Anna has moved on to the big psychic faire in the sky but her son Albert is just as talented.

Oh, yeah. In fact, this woman was so scarily right that I'm building a character in my book around her. I called her the Eeyore of psychics - unlike your experiences, Beth, she only ONLY ever saw the bad news. She said glumly, "you'd better pay me in advance. Nobody ever wants to pay after they hear the news." Sure enough, it was bad bad bad news, something I was completely and utterly unaware of, and she was right. Scary.

I've been a bunch of times. The first time I went was on my 17th birthday. I walked into the woman's house (she was a word-of-mouth kind of person, no shingle, no neon sign) and she said "Happy Birthday!" She'd never seen me before, didn't even know my name before I arrived... she saw all kinds of things... good and bad... although at 17, I told her I didn't want to hear about death. Since then, she's passed away.
Anyway, I found a new reader... she sees good and bad as well... and I go once in a while. It's stupid, but if I'm feeling especially down, or worried, or scared, I go. I think it helps me to hear that things will turn out okay.

I went to a psychic back in undergrad "just for fun." She told me that I would get into my grad school of choice (with scholarship) but that I wouldn't end up doing what I thought I would be doing. So true! I am currently in the process of changing careers completely. She also said that I would meet and marry an older man and be very happy. I don't personally believe that 3 years constitutes "older," but who am I to judge?

Well, I read tarot; my friends say that I'm pretty good even though I don't know what the hell I'm doing. I see the pictures and tell the stories. I use the Voyager deck, which is all photomontage images, because I get more information from the images than the traditional '7 of pentacles' kind of deck.
I've heard tarot explained as a library of images that our brains read much easier than text and so can show us things we know internally but haven't been able to express.

I have a friend who reads Tarot cards who is pretty accurate. She keeps it all very short term which is a little less risky. I read Rune cards (and have a Rune symbol tattooed on my ankle). I'm not as good as she is, but I do all right.

I've been to different ones a couple of times. I was most impressed with the first one, who was eerily correct on things for both myself and the friend who went to her, too. The second one was good but all I can remember of that one was her telling me about one of my past lives. Evidently I was one of many wives of a really not so nice man. I was also the ringleader in poisoning him and putting all of us out of our misery. I remind my husband of that frequently...Hmmm. I'm going to be visiting my friend in June (the one who took me to the second psychic). Perhaps it's time for a new visit!

I've talked to a clairvoyant/psychic twice and she's been right on both times. Plus its always neat to see who comes through in a reading.

I've gone a few times. I remember the first time most. It was in New Orleans, and it was scary. I took off all my jewelry before, and dressed very casual. I walked in, she grabbed my hand and sat me down, then told me that I was pregnant(just foud out two days earlier), it would be a girl(yep), he wasn't happy about the baby (yep),I was in the Navy(yep), I'd get married(yep), he'd leave then come back(yep), then I'd be on my own for a very long time(yep). But I would end up happy, with a lot of kids(yep). And I'd get to travel. A lot(yep).
I had it on tape for a long time. It was scary how accurate she was.
None of the others have ever been that accurate, and I'm glad. Once in a lifetime is enough for me.

Ooo--I used to read Rune stones. Didn't know they had cards. I would put them in the bag, and rub them between my fingers and pull the ones that just felt "right". I was pretty good. Still like to pull them out once in awhile if I have a question or something is bothering me and I'm not sure which way to go.
