All That Glitters...
Might not be gold, but...
...Glam Rock!
I'm sure you're all way too young to remember glam rock, lol. Of course, I was only a wee girl myself when it was all the rage in the 70's. But this week I had reason to take a little trip down memory lane and check out some of my favorite songs from that era on YouTube. I hope you will indulge me, dear chicklets, if I share them with you.
Check out Darling David Bowie's makeup, hair and shoes for Life On Mars, here.
And what about Sir Elton singing Tiny Dancer - would you just look at that glittery jacket!
Another favorite of all time - the one and only (and sadly no longer with us) Marc Bolan - an absolute god of the glam rock age! King of velvet and shine! Here he is performing Children of the Revolution. (And just look who's playing piano and drums - Elton John and Ringo Starr!)
Okay, I hear you all cry. Enough already, Michelle! What does this have to do with anything?
Well, on Sunday afternoon Teenager #2 announced that he needed a glam rock costume for his part in the school cultural show, and he had to take it into school on Monday morning! No time to procrastinate, no time for elaborately planned costumes, it was already 3pm in the afternoon and most of the shops shut at 5pm on Sundays, so it would have to be a quick job indeed!
What would I do? Would anything glittery and glamorous leap off the store shelves and urge me to buy them? Here's my recipe for (hopefully) glam rock success!
Clothes: old fake leather jacket, old dojo pants.
Glam rock-ish ingredients: Yards and yards and yards of metallic gift-wrap ribbon, lots of big metallic circles, glittery cocktail drink decorations, and a stapler.
Staple metallic gift wrap all around the edges of the jacket and sleeves. Ditto to the bottom of the pants.
Staple glittery cocktail decorations to lapels of jacket.
Staple metallic silver and purple circles at will, wherever there is a space on either the jacket or the pants (depending on the size and reach of the stapler).
Staple curled strands of metallic ribbon to the under side of the whole length of the arms. Ditto to the back of the jacket.
And voila! a glam rock outfit! Okay, so it's not perfect, but it was the best I could pull together in such a short period of time.
Sadly, Teenager #2 whisked the outfit off to school before I could whip out the digital camera and take a few snaps, but the concert is tonight so I promise that I will snap away and post a pic here on Tuesday next week!
Chicklets, I'd love to hear about your last-minute costume creations. Or please feel free to share your favorite glam rock moments (if you have any!)
Michelle

Thank god you're going to take pictures! I was going to demand that you share with all of us your stunning glam rock work!
I am definitely old enough to remember glam rock, although many have noted that my musical tastes leave much to be desired (me being the queen of bubblegum pop and all).

Ay yi yi, Michelle! Thing Two was just asking who David Bowie was the other day. Thing One's answer was, "he's the dude that does the ch-ch-changes song" which, while accurate, seemed entirely insufficient. I can't wait until he gets home from school so I can show him that!

Once I went to a Halloween party as a bag of leaves. It was autumn. There were leaves on the ground. I was leaking leaves out of the leg holes in the plastic garbage bag, but otherwise, it was a good costume.

Just this past October, my son came home from school (he's 11 and in the 5th grade) with the "Monster" assignment. Each child was assigned a monster and the children had to research it and write a paper and come dressed as the monster.
Some kids got vampires. Easy, it's nearly Halloween and those little, wax vampire teeth are easy to come by. My son got The Loch Ness monster.
Yes. That's right. The. Loch. Ness. Monster.
HOW THE HECK DO YOU DRESS UP AS THE LOCH NESS MONSTER?!
So I thought. And I thought. And I thought some more. And then I had it.
I went out to the store. I bought a piece of foam board. And some balloons and poster board. Then I went to another store and I bought some tulle in two different shades of blue. My final stop was at Home Depot for a mucky shade of green paint.
I've never papier mache'd before in my life, but hey, I'll try anything.
The foam board made a lake. The tulle ran in alternating streamers around the lake and hung down. I fashioned the neck and the tail out of poster board and papier mache'd em (what a messy task). Then I made the back of Nessy with a balloon and papier mache and attached it to the lake. Mike's head went in the hump and he appeared to be standing under water with Nessy on his head. He wore a scuba mask with it.
The other kid that was assigned the loch ness monster? He cut a paper plate and wore it on his head like a headband with eyes. Sigh.

Ahhh, Marc Bolan. God of teenage fantasy prettiness. Oh, and so wordly endowed.
Girl, I'm just a jeepster for your love.
And she aint a witch and I love the way she twitch ah ha ha.
She's faster than most and she lives on the coast ah ha ha.
And Gary Glitter's chest hair.

Lauren, you are amazingly creative. I love Nessie and the lake (and your son is a sweetie).
Eileen - Things One and Two need Mr. Bowie in their musical lives! (Although I think he should be Sir David by now, right up there with Sir Jimmy Page - and what happened to Robert Plant's knighthood, I'd like to know, lol!)
Wendy, he certainly was a pretty boy. I have seven words for you: Na na na na na na na! I love Jeepster - one of my main Bolan songs up there with Telegram Sam and Twentieth Century Boy :-)
Theresa - I think going as a bag of leaves is inspired - full use of all seasonal natural products is the green way to go.
And Dia - the glam rock costume is now at home. I'm going to go snap some daylight photos because the ones I took at the concert are a bit dark (the concert was totally fab - especially the part where Teenager #2 and his male friends did Queen's I Want to Break Free - all five young men in skirts - it was a complete hoot!)

My daughters have done the same thing to me--"Oh yeah, Mom, by the way...." but usually it is an assignement or somesuch that I am frantically scrambling to find things for. One time DD#2--maybe it was DD#1--came to me at ELEVEN O'CLOCK AT NIGHT and said "Mom, I forgot--I need two dozen cupcakes tomorrow for my teacher's going away party." ARGHH! I was a little bent, to say the least! Especialy since I had to get up early for work the next day! Ah--the joys of motherhood...
As for glam rock--DD#1's school had a theme dance also--you could dress up from any year/clothing style from the past. She is on the conservative side, and for the life of me I couldn't think of anything to dress her as. (And the school is a Christian school, so no mini skirts and go-go boots!) So we ended up running to the thrift stores (yes, last minute, thank you very much AND at almost 5 PM)and she ended up going with the Annie Hall look: fedora-style hat, long overblouse, long skirt, slouchy boots, big belt. It was really cute, and I think it cost me all of $10 to throw together. Gotta love thrift stores!!

Ahhh...David Bowie...rebel, rebel, your face is a mess...hot tramp, I love you so...
I agree, what happened to Bowie's knighthood???
I remember glam rock, although I don't remember calling it that! LOL
Don't forget, The New York Dolls!

Sheri, you did all that for $10? Wow, I am so calling you the next time I have a costume emergency :-)

Theresa, I am still waiting to hear about it. I may write a very stern letter to the Queen...
