La Penultime

Almost time to say good-bye

Last next was the next to last episode of Gilmore Girls. I have love love loved this series since it started which is now long enough ago that Treasured Niece (the one who's in South America right now and is fine, by the way) used to watch it with me religiously on Tuesday nights. She'd spend the night here and we'd watch Lorelei and Rory banter and eat while we bantered, ate and did our nails after I got my little men (who were truly little then) off to bed.

Those evenings were reason enough to love that series. But wait! There's more! And it's not a bamboo steamer.

I loved it because I pretty much am the chubby semitic Lorelei Gilmore.

Yep. I'm a single mom. I was somewhat singler then, too. I talk too fast. I drink too much coffee. I have dark hair and blue eyes. I live in a small quirky town (have you hear about our toad tunnel?) peopled with quirky eccentrics. I have two boys and not a daughter, but I had my niece who was an excellent Rory stand-in. Clearly, I am practically Lorelei's clone. Except for the extra pounds and the semitic nose.

And then there's Cowboy who pretty much is Luke all over. He tends a little toward the scruffy side in the same kind of adorable way. He can be a little grumpy. And the heart that beats inside that chest? Huge. Just like Luke's.

Over the past seven years, the series has had its ups and downs. I hated Lorelei being married to Christopher. The April sub-plot was enough to make me want to bang my head against the wall. There have been times when I wanted to jump into the TV set and give Lorelei a little shake. Still, I stuck with it.

Why? Well, in romance writer terms, I wanted my HEA. For those not in the know, HEA stands for Happily Ever After. It's been clear to me (and I assume the entire planet) that Luke and Lorelei need to end up together. I need to see it. It's probably because I identify so strongly with Lorelei and see so much of Cowboy in Luke, but I feel like their HEA is my HEA.

And I want it bad.

So the teaser for the series finale showed Luke and Lorelei in a major lip lock in the middle of the town square by the adorable gazebo. I am thrilled beyond belief and can't wait. I'm hoping for a MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING-ish moment where Luke stops Lorelei's mouth with a kiss. I'm a little sad about saying good-bye, but also a little relieved that I can send our avatars off into the sunset to their HEA because it means that I can be HEA, too.

So have you ever had a TV series that you identified with that strongly? Did the characters end up where you wanted them? Or did they make you crazy and do the wrong thing?

I don't like HEA, I like more "real" life ends...

My daughter and I have been watching Gilmore Girls since the beginnng (I can't believe she was only 7 when it started!). She and I got misty eyed at the teaser for next week. We started watching it because I grew up her in Connecticut (in an urban area though) and she had spent most of her life here. We were living in southeastern GA at the time and wanted a little piece of HOME. We fell in love with the characters (Kirk still cracks us up, any idea why he was in that glass thing?). I'm going to miss the show, but I am glad that Rory turned Logan down. Nothing against him really, just I think she needs to spread her newly formed wings.

Ah, Lunita, here's the thing. I want HEA to be real life. I know. Impossibly sappy, but there it is.

Kylee, I was glad Rory turned Logan down, too. His character has certainly grown and changed, yet he still acts too entitled. The proposal was just another example. He simply assumed she'd say yes.

I didn't catch GG until last summer and got so addicted, I had to watch all seasons within a month. LOL However, it was dissapointing to come down from that high when they screwed the show with the Lorelei and Chris crapola. BLAH Even the banter wasn't as cute anymore... it seemed to be getting better but that could just be the divorce talking (are they divorced? seperated? it was like 1 episode and gone. LOL) Anyway... although I enjoyed it, I think it's a good time to end it and L & L better be FINALLY together!! :)

I'm a fast talker so identify with that (such that when other people told me the characters talked unrealistically fast, I had to figure out what they were talking about). I really love the show (although my first can't take it was actually Rory and Jess, I missed a lot of those episodes). But yes, I would like a proper resolution for Luke and Lorelai. And I am so glad that Rory turned Logan down, but I will stop with that because otherwise I will exceed the comment word limit.

I love, love, love the fast paced dialogue of Gilmore Girls. And I definitely prefer the HEA. For me, the TV series that got it right was Sex & the City when Carrie got her guy in the end. (Took her long enough!) A movie that got it all wrong in the end was Message in a Bottle. Grrr. Definitely written by a man (N.S.!). That's okay, I just rewrite bad endings in my head!

I totally agree about Gilmore. I wish they'd given them half a season to wrap it up, it seems way too fast.

I think the only other series I was really attached to that ended was Buffy. Didn't like the ending too much, it seemed a little too wide open.

My fellow literary chicks have gotten me hooked on GG. I'd never seen it before, and then you guys started talking it up, so I've been renting the old seasons. And now I think it's the best writing on television, after The Office. Especially the dialogue.

George, however, is not a fan. Every time a new GG disk shows up (I've made it up to season 3), he rolls his eyes and sighs melodramatically. Poor guy. If only he'd suffer in silence . . .

Sigh. I have absolutely LOVED this show. This season hasn't been the best but I will truly miss it.

Oh Eileen, you're totally right.
GG is a show that I really wasn't into letting my oldest daughter watch at first. I have no idea why. I think I was just really anti-tv at that time. Now though, we've been gorging on it. She DVRs every episode, every repeat even, so that we can watch them together at night, when everyone else is in bed.
She's hoping that they don't really end, a la 7th Heaven. I'm hoping that the finale does the show justice.
Shows I've been hoked on? Moonlighting. Loved the series, hated what they did to it at the end. And Cheers. Loved that Sam ended up with the bar, his real love.

I used to be a HUGE fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. There was no HEA with Angel. Three of the main characters died, but one that died "became" something else (it was Fred on the outside, but something else had taken over her body). In fact, I'm still waiting for closure but I doubt that's going to happen now that David's on "Bones".

Buffy had a better HEA: all the main chracters (the important ones)survived Sunnydale sinking into the Hellmouth. Two characters died, although they were kinda secondary, and Buffy's Watcher left midseason.

Cowboy got me hooked on ANGEL. I know there was no HEA, but I adored that final scene with David Boreanz saying that he wanted to take on the dragon. Oooh. I just got chills all over again.

My girls have watched GG for a long time now. I started watching it with them and fell in love with it. I was so ticked off when Luke and Lorelei broke up and she ended up with Chris! And what? Rori turned Logan down? I missed it! Damn! Now I will have to watch reruns. But I will be sure to be watching Tuesday night to see if we finally get our HEA! I think we all deserve it, because Luke and Lorelei deserve to be together. It's the right thing to do!
